The CWRT Ozarks Executive Committee formed a
committee to study the possibility of placing a monument and/or
interpretive display in Clever, Missouri, in anticipation of the
150th Anniversary of the nearby Battle/Skirmish at Dug Springs on
August 2, 1861. Members/officers who have volunteered to serve on
the committee so far are: Round Table Media Director Len
Eagleburger (Acting-Chair of committee), Missouri State University
History Professor and author Dr. Bill Piston , Evangel University
History Professor, Dr. Larry Toll, Wilson's Creek National
Battlefield Ranger (Hulston Library) Jeffrey Patrick, and Round
Table Vice-President Steve Buffat. David Stokely, of Clever, Mo.,
will be serving in an advisory position as site selector. Civil War
Round Table President Tom Debo will serve Ex-Officio.
After declaring war on Missouri and chasing the Confederates into
Southwest Missouri, the action at Dug Springs, Missouri on August
2, 1861 was the first contact that Union General Nathaniel Lyon's
US and Volunteer forces had with the combined forces of the
Missouri State Guard, Confederate Regular's and the Arkansas
State Militia, commanded respectively by Generals Sterling Price,
Gen. Ben McCullogh, and Gen. N.B. Pierce. It was a prelude to the
carnage created at the Battle of Wilson's Creek just eight days
later on August 10th. Combined casualties totalled 125 killed or
wounded.
